Ask no man

No More Contention is the pursuit of clarity, charity and understanding. Contention arises from the compulsion to have others agree with us. Seeking understanding in an environment of clarity and charity produces no more contention. As Joseph Smith said, "I will ask no man to believe as I do."

In a sense, contention is inevitable and unavoidable because every individual is unique, and no two people agree on everything.  Ideally, we...

One step closer to knowing

Examination and discussion of multiple working hypotheses brings us all one step closer to knowing the truth, when we seek clarity, charity, and undertanding.

For that matter, every life experience brings us "One Step Closer to Knowing" as U2 described it in their song. (lyrics below)

A few relevant passages:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

(Genesis 3:5)

17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.

(Luke 11:17)

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

(John 8:31–32)

34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

(Hebrews 10:34)

2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
(James 1:2–3)

31 Wherefore, he gave commandments unto men, they having first transgressed the first commandments as to things which were temporal, and becoming as gods, knowing good from evil, placing themselves in a state to act, or being placed in a state to act according to their wills and pleasures, whether to do evil or to do good—
(Alma 12:31)

5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.
(Moroni 10:5)

24 That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.

25 And again, verily I say unto you, and I say it that you may know the truth, that you may chase darkness from among you;

(Doctrine and Covenants 50:24–25)

116 Neither is man capable to make them known, for they are only to be seen and understood by the power of the Holy Spirit, which God bestows on those who love him, and purify themselves before him;

117 To whom he grants this privilege of seeing and knowing for themselves;

(Doctrine and Covenants 76:116–117)

It is the nature of man to love to know the truth and also to love to behold the things that are beautiful and amiable; but the believer is convinced, yea, he plainly sees, that spiritual things are both these.

(Jonathan Edwards, Sermon)

For the eternal world being what God had chiefly in view in the creation of men, and the things of this world being made to be wholly subordinate to other, man's state here being only a state of probation, preparation and progression, with respect to the future state, and so eternal things being in effect men's all, their whole concern: to understand and know which it chiefly was, that they had understanding given 'em; and it concerning them infinitely more to know the truth of eternal things than any other, as all that are not infidels will own; therefore, we may undoubtedly conclude, that if men have not respect to 'em as real and certain things, it cannot be for want of sufficient evidence of their truth, to induce 'em so to regard them; especially as to them that live under that light, which God has appointed as the most proper exhibition of the nature and evidence of these things: but it must be from a dreadful stupidity of mind, occasioning a sottish insensibility of their truth and importance, when manifested by the clearest evidence.

(Jonathan Edwards, Original Sin)

U2 Lyrics:

I'm 'round the corner from anything that's real

I'm across the road from hope

I'm under a bridge in a rip tide, that's taken

Everything I call my own

One step closer to knowing

One step closer to knowing

I'm on an island at a busy intersection

I can't go forward, I can't turn back

Can't see the future

It's getting away from me

I just watch the tail lights glowing

One step closer to knowing

One step closer to knowing

One step closer to knowing

Knowing, knowing

I'm hanging out to dry

With my old clothes

Finger still red with the prick of an old rose

Well, the heart that hurts

Is a heart that beats

Can you hear the drummer slowing?

One step closer to knowing

One step closer to knowing

One step closer to knowing

Knowing, knowing
